Russian football: Nalchik merciless against Rubin
With a third of the Russian football Premier League now over, Rubin still lead the way despite suffering their second loss of the campaign on Saturday to Spartak Nalchik. Five points behind are Amkar with Moscow's Lokomotiv, Spartak and CSKA not too far behind.
CSKA 4–3 Khimki
It was the army men who got the ball rolling nine minutes in. But Khimki, seeking just their second win of the campaign, hit back four minutes later.
CSKA regained the lead, first through Russian international Sergey Ignashevich, and then through Brazilian Wagner Love making it 3-1.
But Khimki were not going to give up that easily. Nastja Cech sent his side back into the game after a brilliant shot from 30 yards.
The second half brought two more goals and a really shocking amount of wasted chances for both sides. However Khimki's Eldar Nizamutdinov hit the equaliser with just three minutes left to go.
But some would conclude the army men had more than their share of luck on the day. CSKA snatched victory with a penalty and Brazilian Dudu tucked it home right before the final whistle.
Saturn 2–0 Dynamo
CSKA's city rivals Dynamo, meanwhile, have seen their winless streak stretch to almost a month. A 2-0 away loss to Saturn put another question mark upon their title credentials.
A terrific start to the season, which saw the white and blues win four in a row, was further cast into the past, when Marko Topic slid the ball into the visitor's goal, 32 minutes in.
Number two for Saturn came right at the end of the first half. Dmitry Kirichenko found his range to perfection.
Krylya Sovetov 1–1 Spartak
In Samara, Spartak Moscow took on Krylya Sovetov, knowing a win would put them second.
But the hosts took the lead five minutes from the break. Juan Carlos Escobar was credited with the goal, though it's clear the final touch came off a Spartak defender.
And then came one of the most unusual goals of the season to date. An in-swinging ball into the Krylya penalty box eventually fell to Cristian Maidana, who cracked the post with his effort. The ball ricocheted out and somewhat comically banged off the shoulder of the goalkeeper and into the net.
Terek 0–1 Amkar
Amkar have surprised everyone again. The men from Perm got up to second in the table following a 1-0 win away to FC Terek. The sole goal of the game came seven minutes in.
Shinnik 0–1 FC Moscow
The preparation for the match was a real headache for the Yaroslavl side. Four payers, including a goalkeeper, were suspended after their voyage to Moscow on May 6, when they lost to Spartak.
Meanwhile, the townsmen, who came 4th last season, were committed to finally getting off the bottom.
So the result of the game came as no surprise for specialists – 1-0 to FC Moscow after Petr Bystrov's shot.
Spartak Nalchik 2–0 Rubin
The Kazan side have suffered their second defeat so far. And their offenders were again Spartak, this time from Nalchik.
2-0 was the final score, though it could have been 3-0, but Spartak missed a penalty in the second half, during injury time.
Lokomotiv 2–0 Tom
The Muscovites didn't have any problems in the game, and now put in a claim for the second place in the league as they have one extra game left. However, in order to fortify these claims they need to beat last year's champions Zenit away.
Luch-Energia v Zenit was postponed due to St. Petersburg side's preparations for the UEFA Cup final on May 14.
