- I do not believe so, but I can say that the nation state of Scotland has an equal claim as Denmark.
In this globalised world it is important to work collectively with all the nations that have a claim to the Arctic Oil.
Aconsidered approach would be a United Nations revised Treaty for all the respective parties that want to commercialise the North Pole and Arctic Oil reserves.

- Interesting - have you looked at a map lately? Are you going to tell me that Alaska is Canadian? Or that Novaya Zemlya is really a part of Prince Edward Island? I was not aware that Alaskans and Novaya Zemlya inhabitants voted for the Canadian Parliament. I will update my political entry right away! And Murmansk, why did those damn commies steal it from Canada! Any relation you have to Candon, the Canadian "hockey fan" who first replies to other people's posts and then gets them banned?

- Sorry Interesting,Neither The RF or USA wants Canada or any of its territory. The Arctic is massive, all surrounding countries have lands arround it(mostly Russia and Canada)
It has nothing to do with those islands what so ever.
We are talking about the Arctic sea here.
There is an international law in place(not too clear on it,maybe someone would like to explain)Which allows a country to claim exclusive mining rights if it is shown that the sea floor is an extension of their continental shelf.
That is what it is all about.

- Interesting
The area has been and is Canadian not russian and now US.
The people who live there are Canadian voting and electing people to parliment for years and years and years .
Canada seems to have been in the region for many many years without any US or Russian or any other countries involvement . I was there back in the 60's and now Russia and USA are argueing here about which of them owns it

- You guys want the truth about the Arctic? It's going to be first come, first serve. Yes it's unfair, tough. Halliburton's invasion of Iraq was unfair too. Russia has a lot of oil in Russia and a lot of oil in the Arctic. So it'd be intelligent of them to drill the oil from the Arctic first, where it's disputed. If the US and UK want to protest, well their own oil companies are far from angellic. The intelligent thing for the UN to do would be to give part of the Arctic to Russia (becuase they'll take it anyways) part to other countries surrounding it, and make the center shared by the UN. And what's the rest of the World going to do? When Russia de-facto made Abkhazia and Southern Ossetia part of Russia by giving everyone there a Russian passport, the response was "umm, uhh, geez they are powerful, umm, uhh, hey look let's report on that water-skiing squirrel!" The Arctic is disputed, which translates into first come first serve. And Russians have the tech. People like me in the US have been telling Dubya and his Neocon gang, "research better tech" but he invades Iraq. Well that's what happens, and what will keep on happening unless NATO drastically alters its policies from pro-bullying to pro-research. Today Russia and China stand up to it, tomorrow it will be India, and so on; why does it take some people so long to get the message and stop "liberating" people by dropping bombs on their head and "borrowing" their natural resources.

- Yes we all had a good laugh at the Titanic stunt a few months ago, but personally I don't begrudge the Russian people a bit of fun: once all the patriotic hoo-ha died down (and with elections safely won :-) ) a much more pragmatic assessment of the situation is being made, as was always going to be the case.
Russia has a right to a share of the Arctic resources, a share is all it's going to be, and a share is all that's being claimed.
So we can all calm down again (!)

- Really funny martin, did you even read your own link? What has Russia got to do with it? Why are you not blaiming Reuters for it? After all it was them that mixed up the footage.
Dan yes why don't the Russians also give up moscow as a good will gesture too.
If the north pole is proven to be part of the continental shelf of Euroasia then the international law will give Russia exclusive mining rights to it. Business is business. I wonder if you will come here to call people "bloody fools" if it is shown that it is actually the continental shelf of the americans.
Funny how many people show their ignorance by not even finding out what the claim is all about.

- Russia deserves claim on north pole and the arctic.they have maximum borders with the arctic lands and have always lived in the vicinity of it . so they rightly deserve exclusive rights for arctic or its natural resources.after proving the ridge underneath it is totally clear that arctic belongs to Russia in the same way as does the Ukraine , Belarus , and other nations broken from it in 1992.

- I hope everyone is aware of the hoax the Russians tried to pull with their underwater achievements - they were scenes from the movie Titanic. Here's a link (or search from google: north pole russia flag finland OR finnish)

- I would have thought that Russia would have built a wall around the pole by now with plenty of mines wire and armed patrols like they did in Europe many years ago.Bloody fools all of them.Do they never stop and look at themselves?
- oleg May 11, 2008, 08:52
- The Arctic should be an internationl zone. No nation has a right to claim it. All this amounts to is greed and power!
- Ahmed Ojullah May 4, 2008, 17:31
- Putting a flag at the bottom of the Artic is good and a pride to Russia. Why are some bias people and states too negative about Russia? They portray anything about Russia as bad but the same thing is praised when done by another ally of theirs. This must stop. We need no unipolar world power any more. Russia must rise again to balance isuses affecting the world today. Unipolar has led us to countless authoritarian wars.
I personally like the way Russia is doing things around the world. Unlike the USA, Russia tries to maintain peace and at least avoid arm conflict as a way of resolving global issues.
We are tied of rumours of wars.
- Sam May 3, 2008, 21:33
- People its not that Russia is trying to claim the artic because it planted its flag... But rather its argument on geological basis. If the artic is joined with the continental Russian plate then they have an argument okay... Stop the fuss and accept the reality.

- Robert(US) it is nice to hear a honest person who admits to taking bribs.
That Russian fishing fleet most have been some party ship complete with pretty girls:)
However you have completely lost the whole plot of the affair,You really have no idea of what it is all about.
- ROBERT (U.S.) March 26, 2008, 08:34
- Its sounds to me to be a never ending controversy. If the Arctic is so great why does Russia have to fish in U.S. Territorial Waters. When I used to be in fisheries patrol on the aleutian chain. We used to have to board Russian fishing vessels and inspect for contraband fish. Of course the Russians would allways brib us with a party and lots of good looking women and lots of Vodka.Of course that was the old Russia. Then the Russian women would allways try to teach me survival Russian (Drink Commrad)(Drink Commrad ).Every Russian sailor wanted us to drink from his own personal bottle of vodka. And smoke those funny Russian ciggarrets.I tell you I used to love to board those Russian fishing boats back in the old days.
