- I agree with the persons who have suggested bringing back Misha from the 1980 Olympics, and also the idea of the contributor who suggested bringing him back as a white (polar) Misha, suggestive of winter.
Or, and I'm no zoologist, although i love animals, but are there (and there must be many) animals indigent to the area where the Winter Olympics will be held in the elevated areas of Sochi who are most active in winter? One of them might be a novel choice.

- Oh, they should go for the same 1980 bear dude, with a ski cap or something like that. This would be so cool! If not, I’d suggest the “Nu pogodi” wolf, with his traditional skiing gear as shown in one of the cartoon’s series, perhaps with the cigarette in his mouth, just to be a bit cynical about it :).

- The classical greek olypic emblem. In this world where almost every stone has been turned, we face an inward challenge, a challenge of quality of life. Champions of life win with honour, and remembering the mighty greeks, who were most honourable, showing today's world that their attitude and findings are still relevant in today's world.

- You people are fools
MISHA from the 1980 Olympic games is THE ONLY MASCOT THAT SHOULD BE CONSIDERED!!!
all the rest are garbage, uninspired faces which will be forgotten 2 days after the end of the games, while MISHA will live on. World-wide people >STILL< remember him long after they forgotten all other mascots. Bring back Misha, he made us cry in 1980.

- I was always hoping that they would choose the asme Olympic bear from 1980 games, but this time make him polar instead of brown. Would be so nice!

- I am strongly against an olympic event to take place in Sochi. Sochi was once the mighty capital of a Circassian nation and now a Russian stadium is being put up on the graves of the great ancestors of modern Europe. This olympic event is taking place in Circassia becuase circassia is the most beutiful region in all of Russia and it deserves it's recognition as an independent race of people.

- I don't know if it's just me or not, but when I think of a dolphin it makes me think of something realllly wet, nor can I even picture it wearing an ushanka and being a mascot for Winter Olypmics. A dolphin would be a perfect mascot for some kind of swimming tournament, not Winter Olympics. I say they should stick with a bear or cub this time. :)
p.s. I think this is a wrong place to be discussing politics people, please take it somewhere else.

- We have had enough of bears and Matyushyas, lets have something more Universal and appealing!
The dolphin is universal, is symbolic and above all represents PEACE with A BIG P...
Let the doves fly overhead, the hills beckon in the background and sea open up to a new DAWN of everlasting peace and understading.
Let the national boundaries disappear, the divisions among men be healed and the rifts and sadness be overcome.
Let PEACE reign through Olympics in Russia...

- I would choose two white Stallions. One Stallion standing on its hind legs one each side of the Olympic Rings which shall be in Gold. There will be a blue or red or white Background.

- Mascots tend to be cuddly little things.
I envisage a little bear in a Caucasian hat called "Rossis-Ski"
or a female bear on skates called "Katyatska"
Sochi is our twin town, so here's hoping for a successful, peaceful event.

- And what is the country of your origin Magomed??.........
For a Mascot it has to be something local, from the region, that will unite the multi-ethnic North Caucasus.

- Here we go again people making sarcastic statement against the Russian President particularly in a family orientated forum.
There is no need for this, however if one chooses to continue along this road how about you guys stick your nukes where the sun don't shine i.e. clean up your own back garden first and stop trying to be the 'world's policeman' (dictator more like it!)
Getting back to the point - perhaps using the Bear (as someone has already posted) is a good basis on which to start.
But,I think that politicians keep out of it and let the children of the free world decide (Russian Federation) in an open competition with the 1 st prize being all expenses paid trip for the family at the opening festivities.

- If the purpose of the mascot is to represent the special and unique qualities of Russia, then it should be a hybrid creature composed of equal parts oligarch, silovik, and gopnik.

- Why do people have to make even a lite hearted topic political?
What has capturing dolphins got to do with it? Dan is you are so worried about dolphins and whales then you should be talking to Japan now.
As for Nukes, well am sorry to say this but US seems to be pointing an equal amount of nukes on russia.I do not believe the brits and the french have decommisioned ours yet.
Back to the topic,The brown bear is the national animal of russia and was the moscot for the 1980 olympics.Cannt see why they cannt make him one again but this time on skis
