GET IT OFF YOUR CHEST - With global fish stocks dwindling, and species such as the sturgeon facing extinction, is it time for a ban on rare delicacies such as caviar?

- Not at all! It is time... to get the Government "MONOPOLY" out of the fish business. Turn it over to private enterprise to manage. How many hundreds of examples to I have to illustrate where Government intervention has caused MORE harm than good? The Japanese are wonderful examples of farming the seas with creative new ideas of protecting and harvesting fish species. The problem with "BANS" is this: Here in the state's we banned the hunting of wolves because the tree huggers said that the populations had been totally decimated and would "NEVER" make a come back in our lifetimes. WELL the tree hugger were "WRONG" only after 20 years not only did the population of wolves multiply and thrive they now number in the tens of thousands "MORE" beyond all expectations, they are now a huge threat to humans and livestocks. The problem with the BAN: they never included in the LAW for "OVER POPULATION" the wolves are now taking over! The tree huggers grossly mis calculated the numbers of wolves and now there are thousands of wolves in my state alone. Not uncommon to see them in the city limits at all. The same is true with the Eagle on and on! Bans are stupid and ridiculous...managing the species with smart business practices is the way to go!

- Yes, I think it should be time for such a ban, at least until the sturgeon population recovers and returns to an acceptable number.
Mankind can survive without caviar, but if moe and more species become extinct, sooner or later our existence will come to and end too.
Besides, the Earth is theirs too.

- Business is all about Supply and demand and the exotic fish trade is BUSINESS, in fact BIG BUSINESS. If the present situation warrants some slow-going in exports, so be it-Let the situation stabilize, the stocks replenished, the prices stabilize, the rules strengthened and the fleets be modernized. Gradually, the exports will go up - especially of the canned types, not the unprocessed ones, because processed foods bring more profits for SAME EFFORT!

- Yes, it is long overdue. Don't get strict either, get militaristic about it. Prison for any poacher, confiscation of all property - everything. You have to make it not worth the criminals time and effort to do the crime. If it is not done soon there will be no fish left to protect. As for the caviar industry necessity is the mother of invention.
