- @ GEOPOLITICONOMIST :
yes , probably , but i would put a nuance there ...
Potemkin has been as well the one who , to please his lover , had panels of wood painted as nice and idyllic village on the way of the tsarina's travels (to hide the extreme poverty)
Thu leading the country's people to starve , be counted as worthless and so on , leading itself to the "tragic history" of the Russian population ...
so Potemkin AND Peter1er together would be already better ...

- Stalin. I dunno why u guys forgot him.If Stalin were there soviet would not have dissolved. Soviet Russia would be number one country at this time. Unfortunately Russia did n't have leader like him during 1980's. This leaded to to the dissolution of Soviet and the subsequent crisis in Russia. It took 15 years for russia to regain its strength.

- i must confess that i am really hard pressed to say who the greatest person in russian history because we are spoilt for choice,i have heard nearly all the names of the greats mentioned on this page but none so far have mentioned mikhail gorbachev, and this man seems to be a forgotten part of history and for his part in breaking up the ussr and giving the lands back to the rightful peoples also the part he played in taking down the berlin wall surely puts him among the greats.

- if karl marx's brand of comunism was based on the sharing barter system that winstanley tried to activate in the time of cromwell, then i would have to say karl marx, otherwise i would have to say that putin is also on his way.

- I believe the greatest person is Andrei Sakharov, he helped ban construction of nuclear weapons and encouraged reform and courage among those in the working class.

- Vladimir Putin wants to return Russia to the same it was under communism, just under a different name. Political and religious liberties have taken a huge step backward ever since he came to power. The greatest Russian who ever lived has to be Peter the Great. He took Russia from a country full of savages, and introduced European civilization.

- Definitely Vladimir Putin! I so wish he was running for president here in the US - our country could once again be great if he were our leader!

- My heart is broken. Either due to corruption or misreporting, the press has communicated wrongly about the status of Tsar Nicholas' children. It has been known for decades by the international scientific and academic community that two of the children survived. The Kremlin archives had such evidence and DNA testing was done to establish this fact. How do I know? I was involved in the research with the government and family. Please have your investigative journalists do a better job at reporting the facts.

- The Common Person. for it is the collective strength of the russian people to cast off a government that is not working and try again. History has proven this repeatedly. Russians do not to my knowledge have any constitutional ability to do this yet they achieve it anyway. Wonderful
