Fighting, dancing, fun… a typical Moscow night out!
What unites break dance, hip-hop, martial arts and fiery Latino-American music? They all have something in common – capoeira, which has become a worldwide cult. Master Bamba, a renowned capoeira maestro from Brazil has devoted his whole life to preserving its traditions, and now Muscovites have had a chance to take a lesson from him.
The technique, originally developed by slaves in Brazil in the 16th century, has found many followers in modern Russia.
The art of capoeira is a blend of martial arts, a dance game and simply fun, and the basis of its philosophy, according to master Bamba, is the skill to start and fix friendship.
Traditionally, participants of the performance form a circle called ‘a roda’ and take turns playing instruments, singing, clapping and sparring in pairs.
Those practicing it restrain themselves from inflicting harm on one another, and a good teacher strives to foster freedom, as well as respect and safety.
