Marina Portnaya
Marina Portnaya is Russia Today’s New York Correspondent.
Since joining the channel in September 2007, Marina has reported on high profile stories including the 6th Anniversary of the September 11th attacks, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmidinejad’s controversial visit to Columbia University and the United Nations 62nd General Assembly.
During the UNGA, Marina provided extensive coverage and hourly updates regarding bi-lateral meetings, Presidential addresses, and a myriad of gatherings taking place on the sidelines of the annual summit. From the tense rhetoric over Kosovo’s potential independence to the future of Iran’s nuclear program, Marina kept viewers abreast of who was saying what - and what role Russia played during the intense dialogue.
As the New York Correspondent, Marina keeps her finger on the pulse of the United Nations and monitors daily developments coming from the Security Council, the Secretary General, and the entire international body. When she’s not knee deep in global politics, Marina reports on social and economical issues involving the Russian community living throughout the United States.
To mark the 50th anniversary of Sputnik, Marina traveled to Providence, Rhode Island to interview Sergei Nikitich Khrushchev, son of former Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev. In San Francisco, Marina covered the opening testimony in the Nina Reiser murder trial. She also traveled to Salt Lake City, Utah to report on a Russian man who was posthumanously honored for his heroic attempt in saving someone elses life while sacraficing his own.
Prior to joining Russia Today, Marina “paid her dues” as a local news reporter at News 12 Brooklyn and associate producer at NY1 News, two 24-hour news stations in New York City. At both stations she shot, edited, and wrote all of her stories…covering topics including politics, health, crime, education and of course, features stories.
Marina is a graduate of New York University and holds a bachelor’s degree in Communications.
She speaks fluent Russian.
