Wimbledon catches breath ahead of Russia-US semis

Russia and the US are set to clash on a grand scale on Thursday. Women's tennis world number one, Dinara Safina, along with Elena Dementieva, each face one of America's Williams sisters at Wimbledon’s semi finals.
These ladies are all tennis giants in their own right. Dementieva is the Olympic champion, although she’s never won a Grand Slam title.
Safina is world number one, but is yet to win her first Grand slam. And Venus and Serena Williams have changed the face of women’s tennis with their powerful, athletic games. In fact, only one Wimbledon final in the last 9 years has been without one of them in it.
Despite all that, commentators and pundits at Wimbledon are unequivocal about what they think the outcome of these matches will be.
“Well I think what we’re expecting today is for the Williams sisters to wipe the floor with the Russian girls, and I can’t see any other outcome. I think it will be a huge upset today if either of the Russians win. It would be even more of an upset if one of them went on to win the thing. I can’t see it happening: I think today America will beat Russia easily," Nick Harris from The Independent said.
There’s a lot of history between these players, and there’s been quite a bit of bad blood in the lead up to this tournament.
When Dementieva faces Serena across the net later today, she’ll be looking at someone she’s publicly accused of match-fixing with her sister.
And Venus recently questioned Safina’s world number one ranking. And it’s true: Dinara hasn’t had a very good Wimbledon this year.
Her quarter-final match was riddled with double faults, although pundits say if she can overcome that mentally, her physical strength might carry her through.
Dementieva on the other hand, has cruised to the semi-final with ease.
Meanwhile, it’s hard to predict, who’ll be the fans’ favorite, The Wimbledon crowd famously loves an underdog, but it loves the Williams sisters too. So we’ll have to wait and see who gets the fans on-side once these matches get underway.
