The Mayor of St. Petersburg Valentina Matvienko has awarded Nikolay Valuev a bronze sphinx figurine – a symbol of St. Petersburg’s rectorial council – for being one of the city’s best graduates this year.

The 35-year-old WBA heavyweight champion recently finished his course at the St. Petersburg State University of Physical Training in the name of Lesgaft graduating cum laude.

“My final research paper defense took place at the beginning of June, when I returned from Helsinki (where he was supposed to fight with WBA ‘champ in recess’ Ruslan Chagaev),” Valuev told the Sport TV channel.

“The thesis topic was ‘Psychology and activity of men and women in boxing at different stages of training’,” explained Valuev.

On June 27, the city’s universities Board of Academics put Valuev, along with 77 other A-class students, on the list of the best graduates.

Before making the final decision, the council took into consideration not only Valuev’s achievements in sciences, but also his role in the life of the university.
