The highest paid stars in the KHL could see their salaries cut by up to 20 per cent as part of a range of measures announced by the league to combat the credit crunch.

The cutbacks will come into force next season, and will affect all the players who earn more than the equivalent of $86 thousand a year.

The new regulations also define the season budgets of Continental Hockey League sides. From now on, the clubs can only spend between $ 5.7 and $17.7 million a year.

Current KHL finalist Lokomotiv is the club with the biggest payroll in the league this season – it’s over 483.5 million roubles (around $ 14 million). .
