Jensen Button will start from the pole position at the Australian grand prix, which opens the 2009 Formula 1 season.
The Brawn GP pilot has won the qualifying session for the fourth time in his career.
Button’s teammate, Rubens Barrichello, will be accompanying him on the front row, while Sebastian Vettel from Red Bull came in third.
“The last five or six months for both of us [Button and Barichello] have been so tough because of going from not having a drive or any future in racing to putting it on pole here is just amazing, It really is and I have got to give all credit to the team and Ross [Brawn] and Nick [Fry] for making this happen. This is where we deserve to be after the tough times we have had,” Jensen Button said.
The session turned out to be a disaster for defending champion Lewis Hamilton. The McLaren man was eliminated in the second round of qualifying. He failed to record the time because of transmission problems and will start from the last – 20th position.
The Australian GP will take place at the Albert Park circuit on March 29. The drivers would have to complete 58 laps of 5.303 kilometers during the first race of the season, which will consist of 17 events.
