Russia joins fight for FIFA World Cup

Russia has sent an official bid to host the FIFA World Cup in 2018 or 2022, the Russia’s Football Union website reports.

Russia voiced its desire to host the biggest tournament in international football back in January and since then has been preparing all the necessary documents.

Applications for the bid opened on January 15 and will close on March 16.

Russia’s rivals will be Qatar, Japan, Australia, Indonesia, South Korea, England, Mexico and the US.

Bidding nations must have 12 stadiums with a capacity of more than 40,000 spectators, and one 80,000 capacity arena to hold the opening match and the final.

The names of hosts for both tournaments will be named on December 2010.
