Medvedev announces independence for South Ossetia and Abkhazia

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has signed a decree officially recognising the independence of the republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. He said that after what had happened in Tskhinval, and bearing in mind Georgia’s plans to seize Abkhazia, the two have a right to decide their fates themselves.
