Russia submits new draft resolution to UN

Published 20 August, 2008, 18:32

Russia has submitted a new draft resolution on Georgia to the UN Security Council in New York. The country's representative to the UN, Vitaly Churkin, says it's based on the six principles worked out by the Presidents of Russia and France last week. Russia rejected an earlier draft resolution submitted by France.

Moscow said France's draft focused only on two out of six principles agreed to end the conflict. The resolution called for the withdrawal of Russian troops.

However, the initial six-point agreement allowed Russian peacekeepers to stay in South Ossetia until Georgian troops return to their pre-conflict positions.
