UN sweats to combat global warming

Published 31 July, 2008, 10:18

The heat is being turned on the United Nations, quite literally, as they declare a fight on global warming. The ‘Cool UN’ programme will see the average temperature inside the building rise three degrees to a sultry 25 Celsius due to the air-conditioning systems being reprogrammed.

Diplomats will likely abandon their ties and jackets and at summer weekends, when the air-con is switched off completely, it'll get even hotter.

In winter the plan would be to reduce the heating and get staff to wear more clothes.

If the month-long experiment is a success, the UN could save a million dollars a year on its heating bill and cut carbon dioxide emissions by 3,000 tonnes.
