Russia lashes out at UN over Kosovo

Russia's ambassador to the UN Vitaly Churkin has accused the United Nations Secretary General of abusing his power by agreeing to changes in the UN's mission in Kosovo. UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon has given the green light to hand over some of the basic functions of the UN to the European Union police who are deployed in Kosovo.
Churkin says the move violates international law as a resolution on the issue has not been passed in the Security Council. He added that Russia would veto any such resolution.
Kosovo unilaterally declared independence from Serbia in February. It has been recognised as an independent state by at least 43 countries, but not by Russia.
