Police in Russia's southern republic of Dagestan say they have arrested a gang leader who was trying to unite militant groups throughout the region.
Banmatkhan Sheikhov has been on a wanted list for several years on charges of terrorism and assassination attempts.
The arrest was the result of a two-month-long police operation.
Sheikhov and a suspected accomplice were cornered in a house in a village on Wednesday. After hours of negotiations they surrendered.
