Russia wants answers over Zakayev's French trip

Published 29 June, 2007, 15:16

Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has demanded an explanation from the French authorities for Akhmed Zakayev's appearance at the Council of Europe building in Strasbourg. Zakayev, a Chechen militant leader, has been granted political asylum in Britain despite being wanted on terrorist charges in Russia.

Mr Lavrov expressed Russia's concern over Zakayev's apparent freedom of movement in Europe.

“Zakayev’s appearance in Strasburg has raised some serious questions. We approached the French authorities to explain the issue because he’s the subject of an international search by Interpol. We are expecting a rapid and concrete reply,” Sergey Lavrov stated.
