Georgia strike possible at breakaway region, security service warns

Published 14 July, 2006, 10:54

Russia’s Federal Security Service warned that Georgia could be preparing for military action this weekend against break-away republic South Ossetia. This would be provocation against Russia during the G8 summit, the service said. Russia has increased security levels in the troubled region.

News of possible plans comes as no surprise for South Ossetia’s own security services. They are used to provocations from the Georgian side, their chief says. Over the past six months, data has been assembled on potential strikes, and tension has increased of late. Russian peace keepers in South Ossetia are on a heightened state of alert.
