Brotherhood behind Fedorov’s move to Russia

Younger brother Fedor is the main reason for Sergey Fedorov’s move from Washington Capitals to KHL side Metallurg Magnitogorsk, the hockey star said to Sport-Express newspaper.

Fedorov said he was first invited to Magnitka a couple of years ago, but he wasn’t taking it seriously back then because he had a contract in the NHL.

“But when my brother Fedor signed for Magnitogorsk I made a decision for myself: I’ll continue my career in this club,” Sergey Fedorov said.

“I’ve spent twenty years in the world’s top league. A lot of good happened during this time, I won three Stanley Cups. But I’ve always dreamt of playing together with my brother,” he added.

The NHL player of 1994 said his brother is the only player from his new team he knows in person, but he doesn’t consider it a problem as “it takes just a couple of training sessions to get acquainted with the guys.”

The 28-year-old Fedor Fedorov worn the jerseys of some of the top clubs in Russia but failed to make an impact in the NHL. In all he’s made 16 appearances for the Vancouver Canucks and just three for the New York Rangers, spending most of his time in Canada and the US playing in farm clubs.

Sergey Fedorov didn’t reveal any details of his contract with Metallurg, but said that he’s fully content with it. The player stressed he didn’t come to Russia to end his career, because he’s still hungry for victories.

He said that claiming two Gagarin Cups – a trophy awarded to the KHL champ – in two years would be “a good task” for him.

The forward also commented on the Stanley Cup finals, which he followed closely. Fedorov’s Washington Capitals were eliminated in the semifinals of the NHL playoffs.

“On the one hand I am happy for Pittsburgh, but on the other – disappointed by Detroit’s loss. I thought my former team would win,” Sergey Fedorov said.
