“There are no obvious truths apart from human values” The crisis shows that many theories prove to be, if not useless, then very ambiguous and controversial, says Russian Presidential aide Arkady Dvorkovich, while speaking to graduates of the New Economic School.

A good START for Medvedev and Obama Monday was a massive day for modern relations between Russia and America, as the Russian and American presidents held several hours of talks and signed a number of important documents.

“We still do not trust each other 100%” Both Barack Obama and Dmitry Medvedev are young and not associated with the Cold War era, but they grew up during that time, says the director of international services at RIA-Novosti Russian news agency Samir Shakhbaz.

“It’s a good day, but there’s still a long way to go” "It took eight years for President George W. Bush to mess up US-Russia relations, and it’s going to take more than eight months to get the two talking and working together more closely,” says US analyst John Isaacs.

Outstanding issues at Medvedev-Obama talks “One, obviously, is missile defense in Eastern Europe. The other is the whole question of NATO expansion,” Lawrence Korb, US assistant Secretary of Defense from 1981-1985, told RT.

“Real substance came out of today” – US analyst on Medvedev-Obama meeting “Joint statement agreeing to follow on to the START treaty, which expires at the end of the year, is huge for both countries,” Spencer Boyer from the Center for American Progress told RT.

Solutions are possible – US expert on AMD “Putting ballistic missile interceptors on sea-based destroyers or moving the ground-based interceptors to more southern locations would not bother Russia too much,” said Daryl Kimball from the Arms Control Association.

“New rules for a nuclear world” The issue of the new START treaty is the establishment of a framework for nuclear weapons which has been ignored during the last eight years, says Ivan Safranchuk from the Moscow Institute of International Relations.

“No agreement yet” The negotiations in the Kremlin resulted in a framework for an agreement on nuclear issues, but no decision has yet been made, says Vladimir Orlov, president of PIR Center and Editor-in-Chief of Security Index journal.

“Medvedev developed good chemistry with Obama” President Medvedev has shown his great resolve in developing good chemistry between himself and President Obama, says Melor Sturua, a distinguished journalist for the newspaper Izvestia.

Two stepping points for resetting relations Joint threat assessment and the establishment of a bilateral presidential commission are two major results of the Medvedev – Obama meeting, says Andrey Zolotov, Russia Profile magazine editor-in-chief.

“A foundation for growth and cooperation” Russia and the US can reassert their strong economic ties through questions tackling the economic crisis and trade says Stephen Fisher, managing director of CITIBANK Moscow.

“Numbers are always significant” Independent analyst Vladimir Kozin thinks that the number of nuclear weapons is directly proportional to national security, so disarmament is a key issue for Obama and Medvedev.

“Nuclear arsenals are useless now” The current nuclear arsenals of both the U.S. and Russia don’t do anything to increase the countries’ security, says Hans Kristensen, Director of the Nuclear Information Project at the Federation of American Scientists.

“AMD shield – not a bargaining chip” Richard Burt, former US Assistant Secretary of State for European Affairs, thinks both Russia and the US are determined to reach a consensus on nuclear issues despite difficulties, but AMD is non-negotiable.

"Common vision needed on Iran" Russia and the U.S. should develop a common vision on Iran through establishing a relevant commission in order to achieve a breakthrough in the field, believes Andrey Zolotov, Russia Profile magazine editor-in-chief.

“U.S. and Russia doomed to cooperate” Historically, Russia and the U.S. see the world differently, however, both now have a lot of common threats, which make them obliged to cooperate, says Russian TV host and political analyst Sergey Brilev.
