Some childish analysis I see, so lets bring it to the adult level.
Nato is the stalking rapist, its target is the beutiful Russian lady, with oily smoothe curves and gaseous hair that blows in the wind. The problem is that this lady lives in a castle, the Nato rapist wants to get closer and closer, stalking and planning his rape. He calls on houses in the vicinity, giving money and asking the owners if he can stop by, he says he will turn a blind eye to them raping other women in their control, he understands them well, they follow his personality, so they agree he pays to stop by and they are free to rape as well. Sometimes they even let him rape personally some of their women. So the Nato rapist continues, to visit more houses, striking the same deal, he is so happy he can see into the castle and look at the beutiful lady more and more, he knows though, that the walls are high and the moat very wide, so he asks all his friend rapists, to form a team, so that one day they can help him storm the castle and rape the Russian lady to take advantage of her oily smoothe curves and gaseous hair that blows in the wind. The stalking goes on and on, but the stalking rapist, no matter how many houses and other rapists he employs, becomes frustrated, because the Russian lady, sees and knows the plan and employs more and more guards of the Bulava order, and security by Iskander Ltd. She even tries to talk, she asks for a promise from the stalker to stop, on threat of calling the police, and the Nato rapist says he won't stay in any more houses. But he lies as usual and the cycle continues, because Nato is a liar and a rapist. So the beautiful Russian lady with oily smooth curves and gaseous hair that blows in the wind, has to employ more and more security. At the moment she is safe form the Nato stalking rapist, but for how long will it last!
Dear Ergatis, here is my explanation of the situation just for you: For 90 years, Russia has been behaving like a naughty child, and has been bullying the other children of the former Soviet Block. NATO is the adult who has interveened, progressively over time, to the extent that it has been able, to stop Russia from bullying the other children. What is happening now, is that there are only two children left that Russia is still able to continue bullying, and NATO, the responsible adult, is continuing to work towards helping the two remaining children. Russia, like a naughty child that has been belatedly confronted by an adult over it's bad behaviour, is now trying to blame the problem on the adult, by saying that NATO is behaving badly towards Russia. It is simply a case of rudimentary child psychology. Kind Regards to you All. Jonnie.
Whilst some of the newest members of NATO have been quite vocal in their anti-Russian rhetoric and none of them has shown any inclination to become involved in a military conflict with Russia. Georgia, however, is a different proposition. If Georgia were to be a member of NATO, there is a very real prospect that Georgia might start another dispute with Russia and other NATO members would have to consider if they should get involved under the terms of Article 5. This might be reason enough for any stable NATO member to veto Georgia's membership. Whilst the newer NATO members often follow the American line in military affairs, they look to the EU for economic assistance and those stable EU members that supply the money are unlikely to support situations which threaten the stability of the EU and europe in general.
People miss the whole notion of indivisibility of security, Russia does not object to a soreign contries right to self determination. What Russia objects to is block controlled armaments on its borders. It is a simple as that. These armaments increase the security of the Nato block, at the expense of Russia, and that is what is being objected to.
This was recognised before, when Nato promised not to install troops and bases as part of Nato expansion, this they lied about, or at least reneged on a promise. So this is nothing new, the security arguments have alwasy been known about. Look today, even Ukraine is trying to make overtures to this effect, becasue they also recognise the problem. So this isn't about neighbours political preferences, it is about an indivisible security architecture, where the security of the neighbors and Russia is guaranteed. The present system doesn't work, it is as simple as that. Even if you take a Russophobic position on Georgia, you can see that the security mechanism didn't work, and as Medvedev said, he would do the same regarldless of Nato. So the message should be clear, without a credible guarantee of Russian security, the liklihood is that Nato expansion will increase the risks or even precipitate a full scale war. Is that really the purpose of Nato! Because it starts to look like it!
The broken treaty of no expansion of NATO was sufficient reason for war. Since then NATO continuously provokes Russia. Russia made the foolish mistake to allow the Baltic Republics to enter NATO and EU..And now its enemies have reached its borders. For example stealth bombers taken off from Talinn can reach St. Petersbourg within some minutes...
Russia should NEVER trust NATO again. The professional liars of NATO will think of everything to parsuade and keep Russia calm... Whatever they say, do NOT believe them!
This article has the truly chauvinist notion that sovereign nations need to check with Russia to seek permission to enter into alliances. It also has the inaccurate notion that new NATO countries sought admission to the alliance not because that was the wish of their people, but because it was the wish of someone else like America. And thirdly, the article is gratuitous in its title; while it stresses over “America’s clumsy foot in the Soviet past,” Russia’s bloody hands in the Soviet past seems to be a matter of no concern at all to it.
The situation seems quite clear to me: Russia lost it's ideology with the collapse of the Soviet Union, and is now trying to formulate a new one. The 'West' is not continuing with it's 'cold war' ideology, because it never had an ideology in the first place. Nato was formed for the purpose of countering the 'Soviet Threat', and now it continues to exist, to counter any other threat. The newly independant former 'Soviet Block' countries, did not very much enjoy being under Soviet domination for 90 years, nor even for 45 years, in the case of the newer additions after WW2. Hence they are 'falling over themselves' to join NATO, because they do not very much want to fall under the domination of a new 'Russian Block' with new revised ideology. Russia has adequate military means to defend itself from any of her neighbours, and her neighbours seek the same for themselves. The Relevent Question is: Why does Russia seek, at all costs, to prevent her neighbours from obtaining security for themselves ?
Bear - you actually say it all; that Russia's security, depends solely on its ability to attack and inflict catastrophic damage, so wouldn't an adversary then try to encourage you to disarm! What is happening now? USA/EU has learn't a lesson, a powerful Russia militarily cannot be kowtowed. So first step, remove the problem, smile, laugh, and kick their weapons under the table, then have another glass, when morning comes, its out with the knife! Greetings back from Russia.
Russia is a fool at will remain a fool, they are actually thinking of letting Iran off, to leave Iran to the beasts -USA, Israel, .. so they could become friends with usa!!! they did such strategy once.. with hitler, .. well guess what happened .. it didn't work..
Against evil, against greed there can only be confrontation that you hope you can win, not an inch back from the opressors of Iraq, Serbia, Iran, Afghanistan, etc etc etc... Venezuela and Chavez got it right, just as N. Korea did, ..but Russia, always hoping to become a full fledged memeber of western beasts.. it doesn't seem to understand a simple effin truth-russia has reasources, they-west wants them for free.. they will pay you like a couple of billions so corrupt people at power could buy ferraris and lamborginis like saudi corrupt criminals do.. but russian leaders actually want russia to become something, to become a true big advanced country.. that is what the west doesn't want.. Only through effin hard work and clean body and mind(vodka and no-workouts!!) can russia succeed ..with outstanding performence in science, and in being independent from other countries as much as it can be.. Russia has all the resources it needs to build houses, hospitals, weapons, etc... you need to get rid of the monetary system and work on enlightening your population, meditation is the trick, not consumerism..
only that can save Russia, hoping for the impossible, is just pathethic!
I do not agree that Europe or USA or anyone else would be stupid enough to start a war against Russia and thus risk complete destruction in a massive revenge attack of Russian nuclear/biological/chemical and other types of weapons. Yes they dream about Russian resources just like Napoleon and Hitler did, but Europeans have gotten their lessons. They know that they payed a lot for their lessons and that any similar adventure would be fatal today for the whole world. After all we saw clearly what happened in August 2008 didn't we. Back then USA/EU only barked at Russia, but did nothing to stop Russia to defend South Ossetians. The West didn't even dare to impose a smallest possible economic sanctions on Russia. The West only barks. As regards Russia I think it shall continue to firmly protect its national interests world wide but at the same time Russia shall keep door open for everyone, including the West, to cooperate with it on mutually acceptable terms. Kind regards from Croatia.
People sometimes miss the whole strategy being played out. The end game is the control of Russian resources. NATO is the tool, and Europe is the craftsman. History shows, that the US is not going to dirty its hands in enterprises that could threaten its security, neither does it have to, when it can find a willing substitute. The game is simple, develop and hone the tool over time, get Europe to use it and then appear some time at the end, when the job is nearly complete, and the outcome known. So the tool gets developed, ever closer to strike Russia, the craftsman is developed, first a bit of anti-stalin, then a re-development of the Nazis, so that they can win this time, there is even a bonus for cleaning up the immigrants too. Then Russian commercial interests are attacked in Europe, all developing the craftsmans skills and the position continues until conflict breaks out. This is the intended plan. We need not fear it, we justt must plan for it, with open eyes. That means securing our borders, in a credible manner and recognising our demographic weakness. This means more and better weapons to devastate any enemy formations. Only when we have a credible defence, will we actually thwart the plan, and allow Europe to remain in peace. Smiles and personal relationships are part of the plan, rock hard defences, coupled with balanced diplomacy is the solution, both for Russia and the rest of Europe. Engage with strength, not with promises.
