Pushkin turns 210!

Saturday marks two hundred and ten years since the birth of one of Russia's greatest poets, Aleksandr Pushkin.

A man with African heritage, Pushkin is considered to be the founder of modern Russian literature.

He published his first work at the age of fifteen and wrote hundreds of poems, stories and fairytales.

His novel in verse ‘Evgeny Onegin’ is an encyclopedia of aristocratic Russian life in the early 19th Century.

Pushkin’s great-grandfather Hannibal was an Abyssinian former slave who became a general and a favorite of Peter the Great.

Pushkin married a Moscow beauty, Natalya Goncharova, and had four children.

He died following a duel at the age of thirty-seven.
