Poster: the artist and the time

The major marks in Russian 20th Century history are reflected in an exhibition dedicated to the history of Russian posters.

Among the180 pieces on display are classic works of the past century, including unique originals – sketches and print screens of posters of the Russian Telegraph Agency (ROST) and the Telegraph Agency of the Soviet Union (TASS). Works of the last decade reveal the tendencies of the poster genre nowadays.

The posters, capturing 90 years of Soviet and Post-Soviet history, are grouped by genres: the political and propaganda posters of Civil War times; industrialization and collectivization; World War Two and Khrushchev’s Thaw; theatrical, film and circus posters; ad-posters; and conceptual posters of recent decades.

A significant part of the expo is represented by the posters of the Perestroika period.

The best poster-drawing masters, responding to the call of time, easily acquired artistic innovations and reflected the aesthetic trends of the time. Therefore, the exhibition allows one to follow the stages of style-evolution in Russian art through the posters.

At the exhibition, the works of Aleksandr Rodchenko, Vladimir Mayakovsky and many other significant personages can be found.

Especially for this exhibition, 25 posters and poster sketches, were refurbished. The oldest exhibit is dated 1918.

The exhibition “Poster: the Artist and the Time” is on at the State Tretyakov Gallery till August 30.
