Fashion and music went hand in hand at Russian Fashion Week as the quintessential French designer presented his latest collection.
Jean-Charles de Castelbajac was born in Casablanca and made a name for himself as a revolutionary designer who has always liked to surprise fashion lovers. But perhaps nobody could expect his show in Moscow to start with … a live balalaika performance.
The Maestro explains: “Fashion plays an important role in our society. It’s full of energy and hope. My collection is full of energy too.” Castelbajac adds that while everybody is speaking of crisis, it’s time to switch on your imagination.

And it seems that Castelbajac never runs out of ideas. “My collection features the most extravagant, funky, funny and extraordinary clothes.”
His most legendary fans were John Lennon and Andy Warhol. Among the more recent fans are Mick Jagger, Sarah Jessica Parker and Madonna, who has been seen wearing Castelbajac’s famous “Teddy Bear” coat.
His career has spanned almost 4 decades but the veteran designer says he still has a tremendous appetite for work. “I like to create for young people. It doesn’t mean they are all in their twenties. They are young in their mind. I’m almost 60 and I feel young. It’s just your way of thinking.”
