Bournonville’s ballet ‘Napoli’ staged in Moscow for first time

One of the most renowned ballets by legendary ballet master August Bournonville, “Napoli”, is to appear on the Moscow scene for the first time.
The premiere of the ballet will take place at the Musical Theatre of Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko on March 27.
“Napoli” is an authentic and old romantic ballet which joins classical dance, pantomime, beautiful scenery and costumes. The aesthetics of this ballet demands from the dancers not only a perfect dance performance, but also the need to perform as professional actors.
“For the sake of reviving good old pantomime alone, the ballet is worth staging”, said Sergey Filin, art director of the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko theatre.
“Napoli”, inspired by travel to the southern Italian city, was first staged in 1842 at the Danish Royal Theatre. Frank Andersen, the well-known Danish choreographer and art director of the Danish Royal Ballet, is directing “Napoli” in Moscow. Andersen is considered to be an expert on Burnonville’s art works.

Bournonville, a symbolic name for the Danish ballet, created over fifty ballets. By the way, one of them – “A travel from Siberia to Moscow” – was composed after the choreographer visited Moscow and St. Petersburg in 1894.
Today, 15 Bournonville’s creations remain in the repertoire of the Danish Royal ballet.
