Free flowers from Pirate Bay

The wife of a professor who testified in favor of the Pirate Bay file sharing website during a trial on February 26, now finds herself drowning in flowers, the Swedish Expressen website reports.

Roger Wallace, a media professor, composer and Chairman of the Swedish Composers of Popular Music, said he couldn’t see any difference between Pirate Bay and other search engines, such as Google, and has criticized the music industry for being unable to adapt to new technology.

He said there’s no connection between illegal downloads and the decrease in licensed music CD sales.

In his opinion downloading, on the contrary, leads to an increase in the number of people purchasing live concert tickets. And people who download files on the Internet usually buy more CDs than those who don’t, Wallace said.

After the testimony the judge asked Wallace what compensation he wanted for his being placed on trial and he suggested that his accusers could just send a bunch of flowers to his wife.

It’s unknown whether the Swedish court has fulfilled the request, however supporters of free file sharing definitely did.

Mrs. Wallace started receiving flowers, chocolates and other small gifts on a daily basis. She has already received presents worth 4.000 euro, but the flower flow doesn’t seem to be stopping.

All the vases in the professor’s house are full, which forced them to share flowers with their neighbors.

“Instead of flowers they’d better send us vases”, Wallace said.

There are a number of special websites on the Internet where thousands of people thanked Roger Wallace and share information about the gifts they sent to the professor. And vases have recently appeared on the list of gifts.

Swedish prosecutors filed charges against Pirate Bay in 2008. The charges are supported by a consortium of intellectual rights holders led by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI). The trial lasted from February 16 until March 3, 2009. The verdict will be announced on April 17.
