In a couple of years Wii users won’t be the only ones waving their hands in front of their TVs. Gestures may soon replace remote controls suggest leading producers.
The Japanese companies Hitachi and Toshiba have presented their versions of motion reading television in Las Vegas at the Consumer Electronics Show, one of the biggest events featuring new consumer products and technology. Both companies’ TVs are prototypes that use infra-red sensors to track the movements of user’s hands, reports PC World magazine.
Hitachi’s version allows basic control with a couple of gestures. It can be turned on and off with a wave, channels are switched with a side-to-side motion, and the volume is changed by moving your hand in circles.
Toshiba’s TV recognises three-dimensional movements and employs the technology for recorded video content navigation.
Hopefully, the times of running around your living room yelling ‘where the hell is that remote control?’ will soon be over. And we won’t see a new ‘format war’ over which hand you should wave to bring your TV to life.
