India fights bribes with text messages

Investigators in India are using text messages to try to bring corrupt officials to justice. They're urging people to alert the authorities by SMS the moment an official demands a bribe.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), India's prime crime-fighting agency, is responsible for tackling major felons and national security issues.
But now, it's reaching out to the population with a new way to trap crooked officials. An SMS has been flashed on mobile phones throughout the country, with a telephone number people can call to report of those demanding bribes. The operation has been kept simple and direct.
CBI’s spokesperson Harsh Bhal says: “the main aim is to create awareness among people as well as creating a deterrent to put the fear of getting caught in those who are openly taking bribes.”
It's also empowering people to stand up to authorities who use their position to extort money.
“At least we are getting the tools to end it, but it is quite basic. I did not have anything before. Now I have at least something with which I can threaten the officials, who have been threatening us for so long,” says Sanjiv Nahar, Space Tours & Travels director.
The CBI has already laid traps, caught and registered 40 cases against officials involved in corruption. But people want more. They want to see quick results and to see their complaints answered.
Former CBI chief, Joginder Singh, says that while this may be a good start, the task ahead will be difficult, because the entire system needs an overhaul.
“Results don’t come easily, because any case that's filed can take you 10 years, 12 years, 13 years. People may have faith in the CBI that it will take action,” Singh said.
But despite delays in convictions, the complaints serve another purpose. They at least provide a database of officials who may need a closer eye kept on them.
