It’s considered one of the rudest and most offensive shows on TV – but South Park is to be studied as part of a course on political correctness at a top American college. The show is to be studied at the City University of New York despite, or because of, its controversial content.

The satirical cartoon focuses on residents of a small town in Colorado. It often portrays celebrities and aspects of modern society in a funny, yet most unfavourable, way.

It doesn’t pull any punches and calls things as they are. Critics say South Park has managed to offend every minority in every society through its 11 seasons on air.

“It has the pulse of America more than anything else,” said Brian Dunphy, the course leader at CUNY’s Brooklyn College, explaining why the controversial animated comedy is perfect for discussing political correctness in today’s world.

“I think the best way to reach students is to make them laugh,” Dunphy told the New York Post. “Once they are paying attention, the discussion is very lively.”
