Fashion icon Barbie flaunts it 50 years on

2009 is set to see doll sensation Barbie rock the world of fashion by launching her own fashion label.

She has been in the limelight for 50 years, and next year to celebrate the iconic doll’s historic birthday, Barbie will strut her stuff at New York fashion week to launch a designer brand of Barbie clothing – for humans.

In 1959 Barbara Millicent Roberts first hit the high street, soon to become commonly known as Barbie and capturing the hearts of children everywhere. 2009 will see toy makers Mattel team up with fashion designers Vera Wang and Jeremy Scott to initiate a brand of Barbie clothing to celebrate her 50th birthday.

The label will not only include items of clothing but will also comprise of a cosmetic range. The new brand will be first divulged in a catwalk display at the New York fashion week in February.

Londoner Jackie Burton, a 38-year-old ex-model and an avid Barbie fan in her teens, commented on the prospect of being able to purchase real-life Barbie clothing,

“Forget the likes of Victoria Beckham and Kate Moss. Barbie is an ageless and inspirational fashion icon. It is only right that she should feature in the fashion industry, albeit 50 years too late!”

The birthday catwalk collection will include a wedding dress designed by Vera Wang for real brides and of course bride-to-be Barbie donning a mini version of the gown.

The question is when will Ken follow in his girlfriend’s footsteps and strut his own fashion collection down the catwalk as well?
