Jesus holding a cross like a club, Moses using the Ten Commandments as a weapon, a machinegun-wielding Buddha, and an unnamed Islamic saint wielding a bomb and a dagger find themselves among the characters of a brand new board game.
Released in September the self-labeled ‘world's first satirical board game of religious warfare’ looks to become a subject of a heated debate.
Despite the fact that world domination, even one with the help of various ancient or fictional gods, has long been a part of both video and board gaming, until now none had featured key figures from major religions.
Players can choose among Jesus, Moses, Kali, Buddha, an anonymous Islamic leader, or create a custom god with stickers, to move across the game board. As the players move around the board they draw cards containing either natural disasters or conversions so as to gain the maximum number of followers.
A typical conversion card says: “Another god's follower challenges you to prove you exist; you fry him with lightning in front of a crowd. Gain one sect,” another one goes “Endless 'War on Terror' provides terrorist job stability. Gain three Muslim sects,” while a disaster card says: “Overemphasis on guilt drives millions to depression and suicide. Kill three Christian sects.”
Though no official action has been taken, the U.S. media is already speculating which religious groups might feel offended, while major retailers are in no rush to sign distribution contracts with the game developers.
