Estonian immigration officials have been left with egg on their faces after they let a dead person cross the border into Russia. The guards failed to notice that the early-morning bus from Tallinn to St Petersburg had a dead woman on board. Estonia’s Department of Border Control has launched an investigation into the incident.

Early on November 2, Russian border guards in Ivangorod checked the coach when it crossed from Estonia and discovered the toilet door was locked, reported the Estonian paper, "Den za dnyom’. When they forced it open, they found the body of a 60-year-old woman.

Apparently the woman, named Lyudmila, felt unwell on the journey and went to the lavatory. A forensic medical examination revealed she died of a stroke.

Lyudmila was a Russian citizen who lived in Estonia with her daughter.
