Thousands of Japanese campaign for manga marriage

Published 30 October, 2008, 11:08

A Japanese man has decided to marry a cartoon character. Taichi Takashita is sure he is not the only one to do so and has launched an online campaign to gather signatures in the support of his idea.

Within a week 1,000 people had signed the petition but the man hopes to gain up to one million votes. Obviously, like Takashita, these are people who are no longer interested in the three-dimensional world.

It is not clear in what way communication will be established between human being and two-dimensional characters. However, it is worth preparing the legal framework for the future. After all, just several decades ago nobody could imagine an electronic household pet and now it’s a common thing in Japan.

Still, the struggle for the rights of cartoon characters might take quite a long time as no doubt the authorities would consider an inter-dimensional wedding to be a Mickey Mouse ceremony.

Comic books, or manga, enjoy great popularity in Japan. Some people are so addicted to them that they even sever ties with their families. This month there were reports of a woman seeking to kill her parents because they wanted to throw away her comic books
