Atlant back on top of KHL

Published 29 October, 2008, 14:25

It was business as usual for KHL leaders Atlant on Tuesday. The men from the Moscow region won again, but by the narrowest of margins, this time against Sibir.

Table-topping Atlant were looking for a morale-boosting win against struggling Sibir.

The side from Mytishchi had won 11 in a row earlier in the season, but came into this match, with only one win in their last three.

The home team dominated the opening period, but a combination of excellent goaltending by Konstantin Symchuk and a series of poor final passes kept the scores level.

It was a similar story in the second.

However, just a minute into the final period, they finally managed to open the scoring, when Sergey Mozyakin notched  his 12th goal of the season. The home side didn't have to wait long to double their advantage, Aleksandr Koroluk making it two with his wrist shot.

Minutes later, Sergey Mozyakin had the chance to put the result beyond any doubt, after winning a penalty shot. However, the forward's weak shot was easily saved.

Sibir gave themselves a lifeline with ten minutes to go, through a well-worked goal on the powerplay by Denis Turin. Atlant came under a lot of pressure late on, but were able to hold on for victory.

“It was a good win, but we were certainly made to work hard,”  concluded the game's hero Sergey Mosyakin.
