A bridge being built over the Yenisey River in the Krasnoyarsk region of Siberia will be the first to be partly controlled by Russia's GLONASS satellite navigation system. The announcement was made as Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin visited the site on Tuesday.
GLONASS – described as the Russian answer to GPS – will gather technological information and data on weather conditions. It will monitor the construction process as well as the bridge's operation.
Now the initial stage is complete, 15,000 cars a day will be able to cross the bridge.
Three GLONASS satellites have already been launched into orbit, while three more are planned to be launched by the end of the year.
