Zenit blast eight to set new club record

Published 05 October, 2008, 22:56

Reigning champions Zenit may be 14 points off the top spot in the Russia's Premier League, but after an 8-1 demolition of Luch Energia, Dick Advocaat's men charges cannot be totally ruled out. CSKA Moscow continue their pursuit of leaders Rubin Kazan as they beat Khimki 2-1.

Zenit St. Petersburg 8 Luch Energia Vladivostok 1

All the big names were out at the Petrovsky Stadium. Andrey Arshavin found the net once, while Danny grabbed 2, but both were outdone by Fattih Tekke, who claimed his first hat-trick of the season after the break.

Zenit's record score helps move them up to fifth place.

Khimki (Moscow Region) 1  CSKA Moscow 2

The win puts the Army men back up to second place.

The visitors got the ball rolling in the 32nd minute when Aleksey Berezutsky was quickest to react in the six-yard box after a well-worked free-kick.CSKA doubled their advantage 22 minutes after the break. Pavel Mamayev pounced after Vagner Love's initial effort was only parried by the Khimki shot stopper.

But Khimki never stopped trying and the relegation-threatened team managed to pull one back in stoppage time when Aleksey Berezutsky's own goal made it 2-1.

Amkar Perm 0 Terek Grozny 0

Fellow championship hopefuls Amkar were once again frustratingly held to a scoreless draw by lower placed opposition. The Perm side, who have been in second for most of the season, failed to break the deadlock against Terek Grozny.

Spartak Moscow 0 Krylya Sovietov 1

Michael Laudrup's first official league home match in charge of Spartak Moscow was a disappointing one. It means hopes of last year's runners-up going one better this season are practically over.

The game was fairly equal in the second half, but the visitors went up ahead after a shot from Oleg Ivanov from outside the box.

With time running out, Spartak pushed for an equaliser but began to get frustrated. First Bystrov saw red for a second bookable offence, then substitute Mozart received his marching orders for kicking out at an opposition player.

FC Moscow 2 Shinnik Yaroslavl 1

FC Moscow secured their fourth win in five at the expense of  the bottom side. After the 2-1 defeat Shinnik’s manager announced that he’s leaving the job.
