Russian channel still on air despite South Park criticism

Published 27 September, 2008, 23:20

A Russian cartoon TV channel, 2x2, is still broadcasting all the series that Russian prosecutors had criticised for promoting violence and cruelty, including The Simpsons and South Park.

The channel took off air some particular scenes, which were criticised by the Russian media watchdog.

In September the station was first targetted for airing the controversial series and faced having its broadcasting license suspended. Religious organisations called for prosecutors to check the cartoons.

The case sparked mass demonstrations with hundreds of young people showing their support for the channel.
