Before Lance Armstrong returned to peloton he goes on stirring up the cycling world. An Astana Team champion Alberto Contador is threatening to leave the team, as it signs the legendary Lance Armstrong.

The American cyclist says he will join the Swiss-based team run by Armstrong's friend and former sporting director Johan Bruyneel.

The repercussions could be dramatic, with Spain's Alberto Contador having said he would quit the team if Armstrong decided to join.

Contador just happens to be cycling's hottest property at present having won La Vuelta last weekend to add to his Giro d'Italia and Tour de France titles.

The Spaniard has got used to being number one at Astana – and made it clear he would not be willing to work as a support rider.

This year on September 9 Armstrong confirmed that he is returning to competitive cycling for the 2009 season. Then on September 24 Armstrong announced he would compete in South Australia's Tour Down Under in early 2009.
