With less than 2 years to go before the first ever World Cup in Africa, the covers have been pulled off the official Mascot the Leopard for the upcoming tournament.

A cuddly creature with a green afro is to represent the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

Millions of people watched the leopard appear in a TV studio in the city of Johannesburg – where the World Cup will kick off on June 11th.

The mascot has been designed locally and is believed to be an ideal ambassador for the World Cup.

Those organising the tournament say it’s young, vibrant, smart, self-confident and warm-hearted.

The reason why they have chosen the leopard speaks for itself. Africa's other favourite predator, the lion, had already been used by Britain (Willie) and Germany (Goleo) during the 1966 and 2006 World Cups respectively.
