Russia's former number one, Marat Safin, has opted not to play for his country in the Davis Cup semi-final.

After Russia's women retained the Fed Cup in Spain yesterday, attention is turning to the Davis Cup team. They are heading to Buenos Aires where they will play their semi-final against Argentina at the weekend.

Marat Safin pulled out in order to concentrate on improving his world ranking.

The two time Grand Slam champion is due to play in Thailand straight after the Davis Cup tie, where a good showing could move him into the World's top 40. He believes the long traveling distances will hamper his chances.

The team will also be without Mikhail Youzhny, who's struggling with injury.

So that will put a lot of pressure on Nikolay Davydenko and Igor Andreev for the September 19-21 matches.
