Prosecutors confirm 500 killed during South Ossetia massacre

The prosecutor's office in South Ossetia has confirmed that more than 500 people have died during the conflict with Georgia. Meanwhile, the republic continues with its revival efforts, turning many places into large cons

South Ossetian Prosecutor General, Teimuraz Khugayev told Interfax news agency that through talking to relatives and neighbours, investigators have collected information on over 1,600 people killed as a result of “Georgia’s aggression against South Ossetia”. The circumstances of deaths and the burial places of 500 people have been already determined.

Khugayev said they have also found the burial places of 160 dead, which will be exhumed and reburied. However, the investigation is limited by the fact not all relatives of the dead have come back to Tskhinval.

It has been a month since Georgia attacked the South Ossetian capital Tskhinval to bring its then breakaway republic under control. The military action has brought the opposite result: South Ossetia and another republic, Abkhazia, have now been recognised as independent by Russia.

Russia is helping South Ossetia to overcome its grief and rebuild its infrastructure.

Almost everyone who was forced to flee the conflict zone has now returned home.

Ossetians say they are grateful to Russia for peace, but the recollection of the war will always remain in their hearts.
