Hosts Lokomotiv Moscow have lost out in the final of the Railways Cup after a 3-0 defeat by Spanish side Sevilla. Both sides were aiming to clinch their first title in the increasingly popular tournament. But it was the
Romaritch opened the scoring with a header after just three minutes. Then Kone added another midway through the first half and Chevanton scored after the break to settle the final score, 3-0.
The only excuse for the Muscovites was that some leading players were given a rest ahead of important Russian Premier League matches.
Chelsea trounce Milan
But before that the 3rd place playoff clash between European giants AC Milan and big-spending London side Chelsea took centre stage. It was a game that Milan fans will be glad was only a pre-season friendly.
Chelsea were clearly taking the game more seriously than the Rossoneri and were rewarded with a 5-0 win, with Frank Lampard starting the rout from a free-kick.
Then it turned into the Nicolas Anelka show. The French international scored four goals in 50 minutes against what is supposed to be one of the meanest defences on the planet.
It is difficult to read too much to much into pre-season friendlies – for many it is just about experimenting and building up fitness – but even Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich couldn’t help smiling after such a win.
