Yoga mania stretches Moscow

Published 22 July, 2008, 15:45

As more and more Russians go east and get interested in Asian cultures, the popularity of yoga grows. Now a festival of yoga called Vedalife has been organised in Moscow. It showcases various aspects of Indian culture, including the lifestyle of yoga gurus.

A spiritual path aimed at achieving harmony between body and mind, the ancient practice has a huge philosophical base. But even those who understand some yoga theory are impressed by the unusual power it has on the body muscles.

Nowadays, many people are interested in yoga as a complex form of physical exercise.

Enthusiasts are not surprised at the popularity of yoga, as it makes people fit and healthy.

Dr. David Frawley, Director of American Institute of Vedic studies, says we need yoga more as we get older, “rather than taking drugs and pills and coffee.”

The festival provides a glimpse of Indian culture, but it’s also aimed at bringing yoga's deeper meaning to a wider audience.

The event’s programme includes a vegetarian project, featuring master classes in cuisine by Thai restaurant owner, stunning performances, yoga master classes and spiritual consultations with advanced yoga practitioners.
