Russian pro-riders conquer Europe’s biggest mountain

Sunshine, plenty of snow and some serious action occurred when a group of Russian pro-skiers tried to tame Europe's highest peak, Mount Elbrus.

Six of the best Russian pro-riders competed in a Red Bull Invitational new school contest at the main ski-ramp of the X-Camp complex, situated on slopes at Europe’s biggest mountain.

The tournament was under rules never used in Russia before. The skiers had to perform several tricks ordered by judges. First prize was $US 3000.

It was 18-year-old Evgeny Vetoshkin who got the groove more than most, becoming the king of the mountain.

“I really liked the format of this competition. Hopefully similar events will appear in the near future. And all this should help Russian riders to improve,” the champion said.

And the organisers seem happy with the way it went as they're now looking to make the event even bigger.

“Lately Russian riders have been showing off some hot stuff, and the prestige of the contests like this one, grows with their performance,” organiser Nikolai Piotrovskiy said.
