Artistic fencing: acting or sport?

Published 13 June, 2008, 19:25

Having begun in Europe about 20 years ago, artistic fencing is now beginning to make its mark in Russia. The first Russian Championships of Artistic Fencing were held in Moscow on June 13.

Every sport is an art to a certain extent, but artistic fencing looks more like a theatrical performance than a competition.

However, it really is competitive as the top eight troupes performing on the stage this time around will represent Russia at the World Artistic Fencing Championships in Monaco in September.

Alec Movshovich, the head of the organising committee says that as a sport, artistic fencing in Russia is only four months old.

“We've just been accepted by the national sport authorities, but now we can confidently claim that artistic fencing is a sport,” he says.
