NHL 'awards' Hart Trophy to Ovechkin

Published 09 June, 2008, 12:53

North American hockey officials have been left red-faced, after the NHL's official online store briefly featured a t-shirt displaying Aleksandr Ovechkin as the «2007-08 Hart Trophy winner» – almost a week before the award ceremony. Later the link was removed and the league officials had to explain the gaffe, reports The Canadian Press news agency.

NHL spokesman Frank Brown put the blame on an e-commerce provider that erroneously made the link live.

He also pointed out Ovechkin was not the winner yet, and the league's contractors had merchandise in store for every possible scenario. If the Washington Capitals' player fails to secure the trophy, all the t-shirts would be destroyed.

Ovechkin, who led the NHL with 65 goals and 112 points, is one of three candidates for the NHL's most valuable player award, joining Pittsburgh Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin and Calgary Flames player Jarome Iginla. The winner will be revealed on June 12 in Toronto.
