Muscovites get nailed at hammer party

It might have taken three millennia, but it seems that the humblest of workmen’s tools, the nail, is finally getting some recognition. A full 24 hours have been devoted to celebrating the tack, and its proud but unheralded past, when Russia staged what is quite possibly the world’s first-ever Nail Day.
A Moscow builders’ market was behind the unusual event. The history of the nail goes back at least as far back as the times of ancient Egypt. And nail afficionados were stressing how, for centuries, it has been underpinning human lives through its role in construction.
The event’s organiser, Aleksandr Markov, said: “All wives often say to their husbands: could you at least hammer a nail in our house? So we decided to prove that every man can cope with this task, and made the nail the highlight of this holiday.”
The highlight of the event was when the national emblem of Russia, the two headed eagle, was created in a unique form – with 150,000 nails crammed into a total area of three square meters.
