Rangers’ fixture pile-up could hand Zenit UEFA Cup advantage

Published 08 May, 2008, 14:48

Zenit Saint Petersburg have been handed a timely boost ahead of their UEFA Cup final with the news that opponents Rangers are suffering from a fixture pile-up.

The Scottish side face a daunting seven games in 17 days as they pursue a domestic and European quadruple.

Walter Smith's team are chasing a league and cup treble in Scotland.

This has come at the same time as they try to prepare for next Wednesday’s Manchester showdown, when they'll face ex-Rangers boss Dick Advocaat and his Zenit side.

It's a hectic schedule for the Glasgow giants, but they began it with a good result on Wednesday night. They notched a 1-0 league win over Motherwell, captain Barry Ferguson getting the winning goal.

There will be no respite for the Scots though. They'll now face Dundee United on Saturday. And that leaves them just three days to recover and prepare ahead of Wednesday's clash with Zenit.
