Pentagon rushes to build cyber war arsenal

Published 08 May, 2008, 08:29

DARPA, the Pentagon’s agency that develops new technology for military use, is tasked with producing world-class cyber war capabilities. It’s America’s largest project since the agency was catching up with the Soviet space programme following the launch of sputnik in 1957.

The project involves the creation of an Internet simulator. The 'virtual Internet' will use special hardware and software to help researchers evaluate vulnerabilities in the multi-million user computer network.

The U.S. Department of Defence is alarmed by espionage activities of hackers on the Internet, especially of those from China. That’s according to the military news service Strategy Page.

America’s answer is the Manhattan project, named after the WWII effort to build nuclear weapon. Most of the details of the initiative are classified.
